Play Therapy
Play is to children as language is to adult.
Piaget and Erikson viewed the child’s world of play as the medium through which the child learns to understand and cope with reality.
It makes sense, then, that therapeutic intervention with children may be delivered via play. Play therapy is typically used for children in the pre-operational and concrete operational stages of development and is used for a variety of clinical issues and diagnoses.

Developmental Considerations
Working with children is different than working with adults or adolescents in a variety of ways. Mainly, there are vast differences in cognitive abilities and emotional development between children and adolescents and adults.
First we have to examine some developmental phenomena inherent with younger children. It is doubtful that you would provide services to children under 3 years of age, so we will focus on 3-12 year olds. Cognitively, their functioning is classified in 2 categories based on age ranges: preoperational for 3-6 year olds and concrete operational for 7-12 year olds.
Preoperational cognitive abilities are characterized by fantasy and pretend play and limited ability to consider more than the literal meaning or appearance of situations.
* For example, a 4 year old would have difficulty understanding that water poured form a short round cylinder into a tall round cylinder would equal the same amount of water (concentration).
* By this same token, a 4 year old would have difficulty comprehending the finality of death or the termination of his or her parent’s marriage.
